ELA- WEEK OF JAN 30

MON- We will work a related cold read, then clean out binders, get new workbooks, and novels, and introduce our new unit: SUGAR CHANGED THE WORLD. We will watch an introductory video on the unit and work accompanying handout.

TUES- 3.1- 2 We will discuss our CWT (end of the unit essay)- HOW DID SUGAR POSITIVELY AND NEGATIVELY AFFECT THE WORLD? and begin our unit. We will read and analyze the poem “SUGAR CANE by Grace Nichols (determine the meanings of unknown words, paraphrase, and summarize it, and determine how personification and symbolism are used to express meaning as well as the theme and the author’s purpose in writing the poem.

WED- 3.3- 4  We will analyze the painting “CANE CUTTING SCENE” to determine the author’s tone regarding slaves in the sugar cane field.We will complete our ANALYZING THEME GRAPHIC ORGANIZER and review the CER structure claim for paragraph writing and determine the strongest evidence for a claim statement.

THURS- 3.5-6 We will read the PROLOGUE of the text and determine the authors’ purpose for writing the text and determine their connections to the topic. We will begin reading PART ONE of the text and discussing vocabulary from the text, as well as the authors’ use of such literary strategies as analogy and allusion.

FRI- 3.7  If all the above has been completed, we will continue our study of PART ONE in the text, focusing on how the authors structured certain paragraphs and their purposes for doing so.
